Let me start here.

I was born into a reasonably well-off family. My parents worked for the East African Community, and we lived in Kenya and Tanzania. We had drivers, property, farms, buses, cars. Comfort was normal. Privilege was something I did not even notice.

Then everything changed.

When I was 13, during the regime of Idi Amin, my father was killed. He was 44 years old. I had just begun to truly understand him and admire him as my hero.

Overnight, we lost him.
Overnight, we lost everything.

All our property was taken. Our security disappeared. We went from comfort to uncertainty in a single moment.

About a year later, my family sat on a mat to drink tea without sugar for the first time. Not at a dining table. On the floor. My mother insisted we drink it that way and get used to it.

My younger brother began crying for our father. Then my mother, a widow with six children at 30, broke down in tears and asked God to take us all. That night, something changed in me.

I boarded an Akamba bus to Nairobi to look for sugar. I was 14. Crossing borders in those days was frightening.

Communication was limited. No one expected a schoolboy to be carrying 15 kilograms of sugar in his suitcase.

I returned home the next day with a suitcase full of sugar.

We sold half of it to neighbors and made four times what it had cost. Then I got back on the bus to buy more.

That was the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey.

That was the night I stopped being a boy.

How I think about success

My journey has not been fast. It has not been easy. It has been deliberate. One brick at a time. One lesson at a time. One risk at a time.

I succeeded because of hard work, persistence, discipline, honesty, and taking responsibility for my life. Profit was never the primary goal. Providing value was. Profit followed.

And why I continue...

Today, I build institutions, mentor leaders, and invest in young people because I believe opportunity should be accessible to those willing to work for it.

From a small beginning and lessons learned the hard way, I built enterprises across East Africa with one principle: create value, create jobs, and build something that lasts. That principle remains unchanged.

I continue to build, learn, and contribute because progress is a responsibility, not an option.
